Here's my dresser that I picked up from a thrift store in Anaheim. It was entirely the pine color and I taped off areas and painted the rest. The chair I got from a Goodwill and painted.

So I finally finished a piece! The detail image is way crooked, but my camera battery was almost dead so I just left it. The sketched out portrait will be a companion head dress piece.

Ok, finally getting around to updating this thing. These are just a few things I've been working on. The girl with the pink sunglasses is a Sean Cheetham copy and the painting with the headdress bouquet thing is the start of my thesis work. Still a lot of redrawing to be done on it.

My first week back has been pretty crazy. I have a one page abstract to write for thesis, a 1200 word paper to write as well as a stack of theoretical criticisms to read and a presentation that's next thurs. to prepare for in my theory class, a drawing and painting to do for homework in two other classes as well as prepare for my group critique in two weeks. This is every thing graduate school should be, and I can rest assured that I'm getting an excellent education for all this money I'm spending.... speaking of which, thank you Mommy and Daddy for buying all those art supplies, the car, and the various other expenses I incur :)

One picture is my stack of readings for the semester for theory and the other is a painting I did in class.

Here's my new studio! Just to give an idea of how awesome the natural light is, these pictures were taken without any lights on and it was a cloudy morning. Dork that I am, I chose this studio because I thought the windows had character; character being bullet holes...

I put an apple in the life painting because I got bored (it was a four day pose and I was working on a fairly small canvas) and I think it's actually my favorite part of the painting. The other piece was one I just did for fun.

yet another self portrait attempt. I'm still working on it, but I think this one's better. The other is a portrait done in class. The model has all kinds of crazy tattoos and peircings; he was an elder vampire in the movie Blade. His likeness isn't so great, but I took pictures of the pose to work on later.

First day

So my first day of school was Tuesday. It was, to say the least, overwhelming. I had a 6 hr. long figure drawing class, which I have again tomorrow as well as an art history course. The students here are amazing. They're taught technique from day one. The school has 3 hr. long courses devoted to rendering, that's all they do, rendering. I've been getting painting and drawing lessons from my neighbor, who is not only a student, but he also teaches here. He has me using the Zorn palette. It's a limited palette that consists of ivory black, titanium white, yellow ochre, and cad. red light. It makes the most amazing colors; it's similar to the palette used by the old masters. I'm also being taught to draw with straight lines. It makes drawing so much easier. You use the straight lines to make points that when you connect them, they make your curves. It's easier to understand when it's done right in front of you. Anyhow, I've learned A LOT in just a couple days.

Here are some pictures of Laguna Beach. It's beautiful out here. The weather has been great; it gets to about 50 or so at night and in the mornings, but as soon as the sun comes out, it warms up to about 75 or 80. People have been walking around in swimsuit tops. School starts next Tuesday and I have to go get an I.D. and all that good stuff tomorrow. I have a class that is 6 hours long and meets twice a week (a grand total of 12 hours just for one class! eek!) plus an art history class and my graduate studio work. I will be pretty busy. My 6 hour class sounds pretty exciting. It's called a "life block." It is part life drawing, part portraiture work, and part life painting. The student work here is absolutely incredible. The guy in the studio next to mine is one of the most amazing painters I've ever seen; I can't wait to meet him!
